My Mom is Awesome
My mom has told me that before she had a daughter, she thought that when she did have one, that daughter would look like her. The daughter would be like a mini version of herself, tallish maybe, with freckles and light hair. But I am short, with dark curly hair. I have a few odd freckles, but no one ever really tells me that we look alike.
But we are alike in other ways. I inherited her tendency to cry at Hallmark commercials (no doubt as payback for teasing her about it as a kid). When I am annoyed with myself I will say, "Margaret Nan!" out loud, in just her voice. I eat toast with jelly and chedder cheese and I don't think this is a bit odd.*
And because it is Mother's Day, you should probably know that my mother is awesome. She is awesome in the way that most mothers are. She gave me life and clothed me and stayed up in the night when I was sick. She did all the things that you see on those sappy Hallmark commercials that make us teary. But she is also awesome for the smaller things. Like taking me to see Titanic for the first time with four other mother and daughter pairs. And for sending me many letters while I away at camp, the envelopes decorated with a comic or photo cut from a magazine. Or for letting me read the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series when I was thirteen, despite being a bit concerned about all the sex.
My mom is awesome because, whatever she wants and hopes for her kids, she's always let us figure out what we wanted and hoped for ourselves and supported it. When we wanted to travel, she put us on planes. When we wanted to play a sport, she took us to games. When my brother and I wanted to bicker, yell and push all of the other's buttons she, miraculously, did not strangle us for being such big pains in the ass.
So, Happy Mother's Day, Awesome Mom!
*My mom recently forwarded me an article and noted in her e-mail, "I found this article in Science News so charming and logical. A study shows that babies develop preference for scents they encountered while nursing. So maybe you love toast because of those days." And it's true, toast made from my mother's homemade bread is up there on my list of comfort foods.

Your mom - not only seems lovely - but is totally a hot mom. Perk for you cuz you'll inherit her good skin. :) Yay your mom!
Big hugs for your mom. :)
Also, growing up, I loved toast and american cheese and strawberry jam. Later, I realized that that's a good flavor profile: you and i were mini-gourmands, creating our own version of quince and manchego!!!
Haha, Lauren! You're not the first person to tell me that. She's gonna love reading this on the internet!
Christine- that's amazing! We are so sophisticated!
My mom had a thing for eating pieces of cheese and cheerios at the same time. I still love that :)
